N-back: rules and how to read the score

Rules: one position lights up at a time on a 3×3 grid and then goes dark. Decide whether the current position matches the one from n steps earlier: tap "Same" if it does, "Different" if not. The first n positions are watch-only. Levels move from 1-back up to 2-back and 3-back, with faster pace and longer sequences.

What it trains: the hold, compare and update cycle of working memory. Each new position must be compared with an older one, added to memory, and the oldest one dropped.

Reading the score: each correct answer earns a fixed number of points, so points mostly reflect how many you got right. Accuracy is the number to watch; combo shows how many correct answers you strung together. Matches are relatively rare, so always pressing "Different" can get some right by luck, but then the feedback means nothing. When comparing with a friend, make sure it was the same level.

Tips: picture the nine dots as a 1 to 9 keypad and silently repeat the latest n numbers. Update right after each answer instead of dwelling on the last one. One or two challenge rounds are enough, then back to your real task. For more, read N-back levels explained.
